My name is Akhila Williams. I represent the State of California and Region 4 of the State of the American address contest. The issue I am most concerned about is housing affordability. California's legislative analyst office reports that housing costs have risen faster than household incomes. This places homeownership and rental housing beyond the reach of many working families. I believe this crisis weakens the founding principles of equality and the pursuit of happiness. Those principles do not guarantee every person a home, but they call for a society where hard working people have a fair opportunity to build secure lives. When teachers, nurses, first responders and young families cannot afford to live in the communities they serve, opportunity becomes divided by income and zip code. My vision is practical. Build more homes at different price levels and streamline unnecessary delays. Use public land, encourage private investment, protect renters from unsafe conditions and expand pathways to homeownership. State and local leaders must work with builders, employers and community organizations while respecting neighborhood needs.
